October 10, 2019 - Cairo to Rome to Atlanta

Image
Yep, the flight really leaves at 4:55 so we’re camping.   As boarding time approaches, people begin standing up and queueing.   There hasn’t been an announcement or anything, and there are actually two lines and we don’t know which is ours, so we just pick one.   Turns out we got lucky! And there’s room in the overheads for everyone’s backpacks.   Too bad there isn’t room for Marilyn’s and Ginger’s knees!!   Alitalia is a frustrating airline. Lovely sculpture in Cairo's International Airport Good morning! Sunrise!   And, eventually, food which pretends to be breakfast.   Three different little sliders, of which I only eat the fillings, some sort of rice dish which is pretty strange, a little drinkable strawberry yogurt, and a chocolate covered mousse for dessert.   I ask for hot tea and get tea, all right, but it sure isn’t hot, or warm!   But that’s nothing compared to Marilyn’s dishes which are all frozen!   And the flight attendant doesn’t do anything

October 9, 2019 - Cairo, our last day

I fell asleep last night sitting up with the computer in my lap!   I think the trip is finally catching up with me!   Still, I awoke at 4:45 and hurried through the morning routine to be able to go up to the roof for sunrise!   Juan is as early a riser as I and he has his tablet, ready for the show! Early morning Cairo is quiet and the breeze is soft and tender.   So lovely! I’ve locked Marilyn in the room, because there only other option is to leave the room unlocked.   If she gets up before I get back, she trapped in there!   :)   I go back down before she awakens to discover what I’ve done! Presently we both go back up to our sanctuary to have coffee and “work”, until Juan and Ginger join us for breakfast.   There is always something new to sample and today’s joy comes from the fried eggplant!   Soft in the middle, crispy on the edges, delicious all over!   Breakfast is a leisurely affair.   The pigeons are cooing, the parakeets are twee

October 8, 2019 - Amman to Cairo

Ammar is coming to pick us up at 8:30 or earlier, if he can get through the morning rush-hour traffic.   We’re all up early enough to have breakfast and check out as he arrives.   It’s on to Amman airport ( Queen Alia International Airport ) There’s a short stop to see the cool tent, restaurant where Ammar waits when he is early for a client pick-up and to let everyone use the toilet if need be.   Then it’s on to the drop off point where Mohammad (another one) meets us and gets us started on the check-in process.   He gets our boarding passes and tags our suitcases and points us toward the drop off place!   Free! It’s on to security where they are swabbing computers and cameras and Marilyn even has to turn her computer on!   But we survive and it’s on to our gate.   We’re nice and early, just the way we like it!   Eventually people start lining up, without even an announcement.   We follow them and climb onto the bus that will take us to the plane,   A young woman g
